John Ryan
Birth: 1823
Death: Mar. 4, 1858

Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 1st Madras Fusiliers, Indian Army. At Lucknow, India, September 26, 1857, when a group of his comrades was besieged in a house in the city, Private Ryan with another Private went forward to assist. They fought off attackers and took a wounded Captain out of a dhooly and carried him into the house for protection. In addition to this Private Ryan devoted himself during the day to rescuing the wounded in the neighborhood from being massacred. Private Ryan later achieved the rank of Sergeant and was killed in action at Cawnpore, India. For his courage at Lucknow, India, September 26, 1857, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
