Death: Aug. 26, 2005

British Lord and Civil Rights Activist. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and served as a member of Britain's House of Commons for 17 years, representing West Belfast in Northern Ireland. He was an active member of the House of Lords and was a founding member and leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) which he helped create in the early 1970s. He was an outspoken critic of the Irish Republican Army for its violent actions against the British Government, and was a leading peace activist for political reforms and Catholic civil rights in Northern Ireland. He died in London at the age of 79 from heart related problems. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
