Death: 1819
Stephens City
Frederick County
Virginia, USA

Emma Marie Bowman "Mary" (1735-1819)- daughter of George and "Mary" Maria Elisabeth Hite Bowman - married Laurence Stephens ca1752.

Children:
v. George William Stephens, 1754-1789,
vii. Isaac Stephens. 1763-1831
viii. Joseph Lawrence Stephens. 1764-1848,
ix. Adam Stephens {single}. ca1765-1772,
x. Bryan Martin Stephens.

About the time the Revolutionsary War was declared, Laurence Stephens died, leaving Mary and her youngest child just 9. Their home was adjacent to and East of todays Stephens City - it remained the home as well that of his widow Mary and those children that were the grand children of George and Mary Hite Bowman

Her older 4 sons are said to have fought for independance and "Mary was declared a Patriot by the DAR Patriot Index of 1973 = for providing supplies to the troops.

"Mary Stephens claim for payment for "Stablage of 10 horses of Major Nelson's Corps one night and a Gun for same use" and "7000 lbs Hay for Continental use" May 1780, validated 1782. {Source: VA State Library, Auditors Dept. Public
Service Claims = Frederick Co, VA, Court Booklet p. 1,9." [cc:RGJ]}

Mary's father, George Bowman, may have sought to assure Mary [Bowman] Stephens' inheritance went direct to her children's cause by the words of his will codicil of 1766; [others persons have speculated that Mary and/or her husband [Laurence] may have had a family problem between 1764 & 1766.] Mary's father [George] amended his will in 1766, leaving value to her children [instead of Mary] where as Mary had been the beneficiary in George's will of 1764. Her brother's - George II's will of 1769 & Joseph's will of 1773 also took similar action to her children. Mary [Bowman] Stephens brother John included her in his Will of 1784, as an heir. Joseph Bowman amended his will in 1778 leaving Mary [Bowman] Stephens as one of his direct heirs instesd of her children.

The unknown Stephens Graveyard undoubtedly was on the home place of Laurance and Mary Bowman Stephens - it's location lost in time and lack of care.
