Gladys Rizzi, Resident of Alameda
Born in Crookston, Minn. on May 10, 1925, Gladys passed away on Aug. 18, 2013, at the age of 88. She attended schools in Climax, Minn., through high school then went to the University of North Dakota (UND) where she graduated with a teaching degree in 1947. While at UND she played in the band, sang in the girls glee club and had a midday musical on the university's radio station.
Gladys taught school in Rugby, N.D., and Pillager, Minn., then tiring of the cold and looking for adventure, moved to California where she taught in Livermore, eventually ending up in Alameda. She truly loved her job and her students and continued to work in education even after her retirement in 1986. One of her proudest achievements was being named Alameda Teacher of the Year in 1983. One of the side benefits of her job was meeting her husband of 52 years, Donald Rizzi, while they were both teachers at Porter School.
Gladys is survived by Donald, her daughter, Jayne (Michael) Hopkins, granddaughters Taylor and Shelby Hopkins, grandson David Hopkins and many wonderful cousins, "adopted" family members and close friends.
Burial will be at Sand Hill Lutheran Church in Climax. Donations in Gladys' memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Greer Family Mortuary www.greermortuary.com.
