Son of Reverend Abraham Jarvis and Anne Billop Farmar; spouse of Sarah McCurdy Hart

Rev. Samuel F. Jarvis married Sarah McCurdy Hart, daughter of Col. Elisha Hart of Saybrook, Connecticut, one of the "seven sisters," known as the seven "graces," the most beautiful women ever to have adorned New England. Together Jarvis and Hart had at least five children, but the marriage did not end well.

Mrs. Jarvis took her husband to court claiming spousal abuse, cruelty and neglect. The case was one of the most famous divorce cases in the 19th Century and was written up and published in New York in 1839 and titled as "The Great Divorce Case! A Full and Impartial History of the Trial of the Petition of Mrs. Sarah M. Jarvis for Divorce from her Husband, the Rev. Samuel F. Jarvis.

Transcription of newspaper article regarding the divorce case:

Norwich Aurora, (Norwich, CT) Wednesday, May 29, 1839; Issue 2; col E ~~ Rumors have been afloat for several days past, and have been published in the New York and Boston papers, that the divorce case between the Rev. Samuel F. Jarvis and his wife had been withdrawn from the legislature, and settled between the individuals themselves. The Courant of Saturday, denies that such is the fact, but says the question has been deferred till this week, in consequence of the absence of some of Dr. Jarvis' counsel.

Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy. -Anonymous
