Mrs. Lola H. Burdick, 94, of 304 Esterdale Lane, Hampton, died Thursday in Dixie Hospital after a long illness. A native of Rockville, Conn., she had been a Pennisula [sic] resident for 53 years.
Mrs. Burdick started the first public library in Hampton with a small collection of books at Syms-Eaton Elementary School. The library was named in memory of her nine-year-old daughter, Esther Burdick. In 1922, the public was invited to use the new library. When Syms-Easton closed the books were divided among Hampton High, Armstrong and the Willis-Syms-Eaton schools.
Mrs. Burdick was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and the Hampton Woman's Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Edward L. Williams of Newport News and Mrs. Carle B. Payne of Newport News; a son, Walter C. Burdick of Hampton; and a grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lawrence B. Wood funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Francis W. Hayes, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond.
