Malindy was the Tennessee born daughter of Cumberland Rector and Sarah Buster, both natives of Virginia. She married Hezekiah McPherson November 14, 1835 in Rockwood, Tennessee. They migrated from Roane County, Tennessee to Cedar County, Missouri in 1852. After residing there for about 10 years, they left the state during the Civil War. In July 1863, Malindy and six daughters with wagons and ox teams started southwest from Cedar County toward Arkansas. Hezekiah met them at Cross Hollows, Arkansas near the Pea Ridge Battlefield. Their son Hardin Deatheridge McPherson was killed in the battle of Oak Hills. Hezekiah may have been at the battlefield, either participating, or had gone there at the news of their son's death. Perhaps they were there to try to identify the body and to give it a decent burial.** The family traveled on to Fannin County, Texas later that year. Settling near the town of Savoy, Hezekiah rented farm land for about four years. Around 1867, the family migrated to Washington County, Arkansas. By 1878 Hezekiah and Malindy had moved back to Texas where he died January 15, 1878, she followed April 5, 1895.*

* From an account by "conniehopk" from a composite account by Kathleen Hopkins taken from data of "History of Texas, the Lone Star State," LDS Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City.
** It is a little known fact that some families did follow their service members in the Civil War.

Some records indicate a numerically transposed date of death: May 4, 1895, but most use April 5, 1895.
