"Our ancestors spelled the family name "Steel" until about 1830 when a few of them began adding the final "e." ...Its use has now become universal in our line.
"John Steele was born Feb. 19th, 1766. The place of his birth is supposed to have been in the vicinity of Brownsville, Fayette Co., Pa. He was the eldest son of James and Mary (Peterson) Steele. In 1788 he came with his parents up the Monongahela valley and they settled in what is now known as Clinton Dist., Monongalia Co., W. Va. On July 7th, 1796, John Steele married Miss Margaret Robison of Fayette Co., Pa. The Rev. James Fleming officiated at their wedding. Margaret Robison was born Jan. 13th, 1777, in Fayette Co., Pa. She was a daughter of James and Sarah Robison. After their marriage, John built a cabin on Tom's Run in Clinton Dist. and they lived there during the remainder of their lives. John Steele served as a private in Capt. Samuel Kennedy's company in the war of 1812 and the hardships of that campaign undermined his normal good health, leaving him crippled and emaciated for life. He died July 10th, 1821, at the age of 55 years. After the demise of her husband, Margaret continued to reside with her children at the home place on Tom's Run, until her death Aug. 6th, 1851. Mr. and Mrs. John Steele are buried at Pisgah Church, Monongalia Co., W. Va."

There is a discrepancy between the date of birth in the historical record, 9 May 1807, and the date calculated from the tombstone, 17 May 1804. Birth records for these years are currently not available from the West Virginia Division of Culture & History, and may not exist. It is probable that the first is the date of birth, and the second the date of baptism.

"Nancy Steele was born May 9th, 1807, on Tom's Run, in Clinton Dist., Monongalia Co., W. Va. She was the third daughter of John and Margaret Robison Steele. On Feb. 13th, 1827, Nancy married Thomas Johnston, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. R.S. Smith at the home of the bride's parents. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Johnston settled in Taylor County where they lived until the fall of 1831 when they moved to Clinton district, Monongalia Co., for three years, then to a farm in Lewis Co. and later to Upshur Co., where Thomas Johnston died in 1840. His remains are buried in the Presbyterian graveyard near Buckhannon. About seven years later, Mrs. Nancy Steel Johnston became the wife of James Sears [Sayre]. They lived at different points in Ohio and later returned to West Virginia where Nancy died in 1856. She lies buried in Pisgah Cemetery."
