Stillman W. Ward
Civil War veteran
Acting Ensign, United States Navy

Stillman enlisted on Nov. 21, 1862 and was commissioned that same day as an Acting Mast Mate in the United States Navy. The "Acting" designation meant his was a temporary assignment of rank, but came with the full privileges associated with one of permanent rank and was a means by which the Navy could fill existing vacancies, permanent appointments being legislated and controlled by Congress. After initial training on the USS Ohio he was assigned to duty on the USS Matthew Vassar, a sloop that was converted to a mortar gunboat. The ship was on blockade duty along the Atlantic coast when Stillman first stepped on the deck. He was promoted to Acting Ensign on August 8, 1864 and eventually resigned his commission on May 20, 1865.
