Gary Don "Donnie" Cox

Born in Broken Arrow, OK on June 13, 1946 to Albert and Eurtle (Reynolds) Cox, Donnie was reared and educated in the Rogers and Wagoner county area.

Donnie graduated from Catoosa High School in 1964 before joining the Army in 1966. He faithfully served his country, spending much of his deployment in Germany.

Growing up on his family's farm, Donnie spent much of his time as a young man roaming the wilderness around his family's farm on horseback. Some of his friends called him "Jungle boy" because the farm was surrounded by woods through which he rode his horses. Donnie learned from his father and grandfather how to train and appreciate horses. Horses came to be one of his life-long passions. As a young man, Donnie developed a strong bond with "Joker," his favorite mare and he would often come home late in the evening tired from riding all day leaning over her with his head on her mane. Many nights his mother waited for him at the gate, knowing that "Joker" would get him home safe.

On November 27, 1964 Donnie married Carolyn Raleigh in a ceremony in Broken Arrow. Their union was blessed with two children, Brian and Angie. Family was very important to Donnie. He attended his children's t-ball games and track meets and loved to take his family fishing, boating and to the horse races. Later Donnie cherished his role as grandfather and was "Grandpaw Donnie" and "Dude" to his grandchildren.

Donnie worked hard and played hard. He was owner and operator of his own trucking company for many years. He owned and trained race horses and joined the Oklahoma Horse Racing Association and the Thoroughbred Racing Association. His love for horses continued throughout his life.

Donnie passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013. He was 67.

This loving husband, father and grandfather will be missed by all who knew him. Donnie is survived by his wife of 48 years Carolyn; children Brian Cox and wife Susan, Angie McAfee and husband David; grandchildren Jordan, Gavin and Mackenzie Frazier, Garrett and Garner McAfee; sister Janie Bickford and brother Jerry Cox and wife Lillie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Vance Cox, Stella Pauline Walker, Alberta Hagan, Jesse Cox, Freeda Beard and Jackie Ross.
