M. Marilynn McDaniel Whetsell, devoted daughter, wife, mother, community and church volunteer, died peacefully at her home in Pawhuska surrounded by her children on August 31, 2013.
Marilynn was born March 9, 1919, in Comanche, the second of two children of Robert Henry McDaniel and Laura Wilson McDaniel.
She graduated from Duncan High School in 1937 and continued her education that fall at Oklahoma A&M (OSU). Marilynn graduated with a degree in Home Economics, and married William Charles "Dick" Whetsell, of Comanche, in 1941.
Dick went to work for the newly formed "Soil Conservation Service" as one of the first two agents in Oklahoma. The newlyweds setup their first residence in Frederick where their first child, Deanna, was born. Over the next fourteen years, Dick's job transfers required the family to move to Beaver where Donna was born, Woodward where Richard was born, Pawhuska, Ft Worth, Texas, where Dixie was born, and Perry.
In 1955 Dick accepted a position with the KS Adams Ranch. Marilynn once again efficiently relocated their family of four children to the ranch near Foraker. The KS Adams Ranch would be their home until 1972. In addition to being a full time mother, Marilynn also taught Home Economics at Pawhuska High School from 1957-59. Their fifth child, Robert, was born in Pawhuska.
In 1972, Marilynn and Dick moved to a KS Adams property about 5 miles north of Pawhuska, and eventually settled in Pawhuska in 1981 when Dick retired.
Marilynn and Dick were active church members in the First Christian Church of Pawhuska, originally joining the church in 1948. Marilynn functioned in several leadership roles in the church, including Sunday school teacher, as an officer for the local and district Christian Women's Fellowship, and longtime member of the choir. She also was an active member of the Osage County Cattlemen's Cowbells Association.
Marilynn was passionate about many things, one of those being football, particularly Oklahoma State and Dallas, and many great family stories originate from there. She enjoyed music in many forms, dancing and singing in the choir.
It would be difficult to put the proper words to the commitment Marilynn exhibited for her sister, parents, husband and children. Her "faith" family ran a close second, as Marilynn was always an active and caring member of her church. A beloved mother, wife, and Christian, above all she was the finest of human beings. Passionate, disciplined, loyal, loving and compassionate.
Her's was a life well lived.
Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Dick Whetsell; and her sister Jeanette McDaniel Ford.
She is survived by five children, Deanna Whetsell of Seattle, Wash.; Donna Aldridge (Henry) of Smithville, Ga.; Richard Whetsell (Karolann) of Owasso; Dixie Whetsell (Dave Underhill) of Portland, Ore.; Robert Whetsell (Lisa) of Stamford, Conn.
Also survived by 6 grandchildren, including Sara Green Williams of Seattle, Wash.; Kevin Shaw of Everett, Wash.; Amanda Aldridge Turkie of Sacramento, Cali.; Don Whetsell of Rockport, Texas; Nancy Whetsell Mercer of Owasso; Emma Whetsell of Portland, Ore.; and Joshua Whetsell of Stamford, Conn.
Also survived by 7 great grandchildren, including Eli and Kaleb Shaw of Everett, Wash.; Ella & Salvadore Turkie of Sacramento, Cali.; Courtni, Malichi, and Micah Whetsell of Rockport, Texas; and Emily and Jacob Mercer of Owasso. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and other extended family.
