LORAIN - Bert Szabo entered into Jesus's arms Friday night, August 30, 2013, at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.

Bert was born in Czechoslovakia May 9, 1924.

He came to the U.S. with his family in 1928.

He graduated from Clearview High School, and joined the Army during World War II. He was discharged honorably and joined the local workforce. He worked for Am Ship, U.S. Steel, Thew Shovel, Freuhauf Trailer, and retired from the Lorain County Engineers Office as a certified welder in 1988. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and tending to his vegetable garden.

Bert is survived by his sons, David (Cathy) of Lorain and William of Amherst; daughter, Mary (Greg) Stempowski of Amherst; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and sisters, Helen Szabo of Lorain and Betty Frye of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis (nee Konieczny); parents, Helen and John Szabo; and a younger brother, John of Wakeman.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, from 4-7 p.m. at the Dombrowski-Riddle Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1939 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery Lorain where graveside military honors will be conducted by The American Legion Post #30 and V.F.W. Post #451.

The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of the donor's choice .
