FUNERAL OF WILLARD IRELAND

Monday afternoon the remains of this young man were laid to rest in the Blair cemetery. The service was held at the home of his uncle, Mr. O.M. Ireland, on East Lincoln street. Rev. John B. Williams, pastor of the Christian church, of which deceased was a member, preached the sermon, and a select quartette discoursed sacred music. Following is the obituary:

Charles Willard Ireland, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Ireland, was a Blair boy, born here January 14th, 1901, so he was only a few weeks more than nineteen years of age when he died at the home of his parents in Fremont last Saturday. Here he was raised and educated, and here he lived until three years ago, when he moved with his parents to Fremont.

He answered the call of his country when but seventeen years old, that was in April, 1918. Sent to Fort Logan, Colorado, he was detailed to Battery "A", 69th Coast Artillery and reached the shores of France August 15th, 12918, just when the fortunes of war were turning in favor of that distressed country; and when the force of the strong arm of America was beginning to tell on the staggering powers of the enemy. It was not indeed his fortune to get into the zone of forming armies ready to move to the battle. He was among the rapidly fore when the Kaiser begged for peace. After six months service on foreign soil, he sailed for home, February 18th, 1919, to be honorably discharged at Camp Dodge.

He has practically given his life for his country, for although unhurt in actual battle, he died from the effects of exposure and hardship. For the sickness which overtook him and with a degree of suddenness carried him off, was the penalty of his patriotism and youthful valor. He was a member of the American Legion and really deserves a name and place among the nation's heroes. There remains to mourn his loss his father and mother, his older sister, Mrs. Frank Stricklett, two younger sisters, Emily and Laura, and two brothers, George and Daniel.

Willard was known here and possessed lovable qualities which won the esteem of many friends.
