|Howard C Baker|
|Birth: ||Apr., 1865|
Howard C Baker (Apr 1865 Steuben, Washington, Maine - died between 1920 and 1930 in Steuben, Washington, Maine) was one of 12 children of Henry C Baker (3 Jun 1827 Steuben, Washington, Maine - 29 Jun 1897 Portland, Cumberland, Maine) and Sarah C Curtis (23 Aug 1834 Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 9 Jan 1900 Steuben, Washington, Maine). Eight of his twelve siblings survived to adulthood which was good for that day and age. He grew up living on the land of his grandfather, Eli Forbes Baker (1790 - 1855), next door to houses of his three uncles: Colin Campbell Baker, Sr (1830 - 1896), Forbes Baker (1820 - 1905) and George Lemuel Baker (1814 - about 1875) and his cousins. They lived in the small town of Steuben, Maine, with a population of less than 2,000 that was co-founded by his great-grandfather, Lemuel Baker (1742 - 1815) during the revolutionary period.
At the age of 33 on 28 Jan 1899 in Steuben, Washington, Maine, he married first Alice M Smith (Sep 1868 Steuben, Washington, Maine - 18 Oct 1902 Steuben, Washington, Maine). She was the daughter of Alexander Wesley Smith (1828 – 1920) and Lucretia Smith (1832 – 1895) and grew up with her siblings Bartlett (1862 –) and Justin W Smith (1865 – 1937) and Olive (1859 – 1860) who died young. Howard C Baker and Alice M Smith had three children:
1) Unnamed Baker (who died at birth on 16 Nov 1899 in Steuben, Washington, Maine).
2) Theodore K Baker (9 Jul 1901 Steuben, Washington, Maine - 23 Jan 1986 Machias, Washington, Maine).
3) Lucretia Baker (09 Jul 1902 Steuben, Washington, Maine - 21 Feb 1903 Steuben, Washington, Maine) who died as an infant.
On 18 Oct 1902 his wife Alice died. His daughter Lucretia died a few months later on 21 Feb 1903. He went to live with his sister Nettie (Baker) Smith (1872 – 1920) and her husband Henry M Smith (1870 – 1925) in Bar Harbor, Maine (then called Eden, Maine). Their brother Kenneth R Baker (1877 – 1932) lived there for a time as well before moving North to Ashland, Aroostook, Maine, and getting married to Effie J Furrow (1881 – 1970). His only surviving child, Theodore K Baker, moved in with Theodore K Baker's maternal uncle, Justin W Smith (1865 – 1937 Alice M Smith's brother) and his wife Mary Esther Phelps (1870 –). Theodore K Baker was sill living with Justin W Smith's widow Mary in the 1940 census.
On 1 Jun 1918 in Steuben, at the age of 53, Howard C Baker married second, Emma McConihe (born about 1879 and died between 1920 and 1930) the daughter of Lewis A McConihe (1841 – 1903) and Susan E Brown (1845 – 1891). She was the widow of Joel A Emery. She predeceased Howard in death. He passed away between 1930 and 1940. He was buried in Daniel Godfrey Cemetery next to his first wife Alice M Smith.
