Son of James and Susannah [Reed] Janney.

Never married.

Enlisted at Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Missouri as a Private in the Union Army, Capt. Lampkin's Company, Missouri State Militia.

4 April 1862 he Mustered-in (reported for duty) in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Missouri.

This Company on about 21 Feb 1862 became Co. H 11th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry. At this time he was described as being 23 years old, 5 ft. 10 1/2 in., light complexion, dark eyes and hair, born in Adams Co., Ohio and occupation of Farmer.

In Oct. 1862, Co. H 11th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry was consolidated with the 2nd Reg't MO State Militia Cavalry and he became a member of Company I.
