| Birth: | May 4, 1774 Seekonk Bristol County Massachusetts, USA | | Death: | Dec. 28, 1840 Providence Providence County Rhode Island, USA |  Providence Mayor. A 1794 graduate of Brown University, he became a lawyer before entering state politics. He served nineteen terms in the Rhode Island General Assembly, two of those as Speaker. He also served as Attorney General of Rhode Island for four years. When Providence became a city, he was elected its first Mayor. He served in that office from 1832 until his death in 1840, concentrating his efforts on the causes of free public education and helping the poor. Outside of politics, he served nineteen years as a trustee and twelve years as Chancellor of his alma mater, Brown, and for nineteen years as the President of the Benevolent Congregational Society in Providence.
