Mary 82, of Los Osos passed away Monday, surrounded by her family.
Mary was born to Emmett and Vivian Joiner. When Mary was 7 years old, they moved to Vera, Okla. Mary was a vivacious girl who excelled in track and field and was also involved in a quartet with her siblings in her church. She was also an accomplished swimmer. At the age of 17, with many other Dust Bowl Refugees, her family moved to Goshen, Ca. It was there she met her beloved husband, Albert, who was stationed in Marysville, Ca. In the U.S. Army. While her husband, was fighting in Germany, she contributed to the war effort working as a welder in the shipyards in Oakland, Ca. After the war, they settled in Visalia, Ca., where she began her family. They later re-settled in Delano, Ca. where they raised their four children. They purchased Cardinal Music Co & A&M Vending. They continued their successful business until their reitrment in 1972. Mary Lou was very active in the Mother's Club in Saint Mary's Catholic School. She excelled and delighted in artistic contributions to the school and local community. She designed and created beautiful costumes for her children to wear in various school functions and local parades.
In 1972, Mary and Albert retired to Cayucos, Mary was a member of the Cayucos Advisory Board and was active in many local organizations. She was very active in the Monterey Deanery, serving many terms as President and was also the Bishop's representative for the southern Monterey Diocese. She also served a term as the province director for the Western conference of the National Coucil of Catholic Women, one of her proudest accomplishments. She was a keynote speaker for many national conferences and was privileged to meet many various Bishops throughout the country. She was very loved by fellow Catholic women throughout the Nation.
Mary was a very compassionate woman always seeking to provide comfort to those less fortunate. She baked, collected and packaged countless cookies for those incarcerated in CMC and Atascadero State Hospital.
She is survived by her sister, Diana Yount, of Boston, Mass,;two sons, Ronald Pogatchnik of Bakersfield, Ca., and Glenn Pogatchnik of Los Osos; two daughters, Annett Skelton of San Luis Obispo and Nancy Matus of Los Osos; six grandchildren, Michael, Eric, Sidney, Heather, Sara, and Jacob; and five great-grandchildren, Brianna, Caitlin, Kyla, McKenzie and Racquel. Mary was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate, Albert Pogatchnik, to whom she was happily married for 52 years; siblings; Vernon Joiner, Kenneth Wayne Joiner, and Martha Batten.
