Obituary

SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP - Delores R. "DoDo" Opalenik, (nee Kucirek), passed away peacefully at her home on the afternoon of Saturday, August 24th after an extended illness. She was born in Lorain on November 24, 1944 and currently resided in Sheffield Township. She was 68.

Delores was a 1962 graduate of Clearview High School and remained active in planning and coordinating reunions and other class-related events, including their 50th Reunion in the fall of 2012.

She had been employed at the snack bar in the former Hills Department Store and as an administrative assistant for Lorain Products. Delores served as the head cook at St. Nicholas Academy, and most recently, worked countless hours as a fish fryer at the American Slovak Club's weekly fish fries.

Mrs. Opalenik was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and member and auditor of the Greek Catholic Union Lodge # 77 and St. Ann's Lodge Branch 114 of the F.C.S.L.A. Delores also worked the voting booths for the Lorain County Board of Elections.

Delores found joy in caring for her family. Her home activities included both vegetable and flower gardening, canning and preserving her fresh vegetables, and baking and preparing home cooked meals. Her favorite dishes were stuffed cabbage, chicken paprikash, sausage and sauerkraut, and her famous nut and poppy seed rolls. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years John E. Opalenik, her daughter Katherine R. (Thomas) Knick of Amherst, step-daughters Patricia S. (Michael) Hjerpe and Victoria L. McCann both of Lorain, and step-son John R, (Anita) Opalenik also of Lorain. Additional survivors include grandchildren Corey Knick, Kaitlyn Knick, Megan Knick, Thomas McCann, Kevin McCann, Matthew McCann, Michael Hjerpe, and Lauren Opalenik, seven great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, sister Marlene M. Humphries of Lorain, and brother Henry A. (Anna) Kucirek, III of North Ridgeville.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents Henry A. Kucirek, II and Alice E. (nee Burcl) Kucirek.

A Parastas service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Visitation will begin immediately following the service and continue until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning with Panachida services at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel; the Divine Liturgy will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 West 40th St. with The Very Reverend Nicholas Rachford, J.C.L. presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
