Graduate of the University of Rochester and the United States Military Academy[1861].
Military service. Second Lieutenant of Ordnance. Commanded a section of artillery at Battle of First Bull Run, July 21, 1861. Was promoted to 1st lieutenant and captain. Brevet major and lt. colonel, August 1, 1864. In command of Indianapolis Arsenal, Indiana, when discharged at own request, September 21, 1870.
Businessman. "Harris was a member of the Church, and an earnest, hearty, happy Christian, and engaged in many church and charitable enterprises." A friend wrote, "Colonel Harris was one of God's noblemen; he belonged to His chivalry."
Was a son of Congressman Ira Harris.
