Virginia Gearing / Decorated 20-year Navy veteran

Nov. 4, 1922 - May 16, 2006
By Moustafa Ayad / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Virginia Gearing, a retired commander of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps who worked tirelessly to establish a tissue bank at the National Naval Medical Center in Maryland, died Tuesday. She was 83.
The Glassport native was a 20-year veteran of the Navy who received a number of medals during her active duty. She was a recipient of the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
Cmdr. Gearing received her nurse's training at Mercy Hospital and earned her nursing degree with high honors at the University of Pittsburgh. She also received a master's degree in nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
"She was very vivacious and sparkling," said her cousin, Edward O'Connor. "She never said a word about all of the awards she received. I was surprised to see all of her medals."
After her retirement from active duty in 1969, she was awarded a letter of commendation for her two decades of exemplary service to the Navy.
Cmdr. Gearing is survived by two older sisters, Mae and Anne Gearing of Pittsburgh.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at William Slater II Funeral Home, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott. Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 310 Mansfield Ave., Green Tree. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
