A New Pastor and A New School
It was December 29, 1964 when Right Reverend Monsignor Daniel Gearing was appointed third pastor of St. Cyril of Alexandria Parish.
Ordained in 1938, Monsignor Gearing brought to St. Cyril's the benefit of years of experience within the Church. After a number of appointments as assistant pastor, he was named Diocesan Director of Cemeteries in 1952, a position he still holds. Named a Papal Chamberlain in 1956 and a Domestic Prelate in 1962, Monsignor was appointed Pastor of Epiphany Church, Pittsburgh, in 1958, a post he held until his assignment to St. Cyril's. He has served on the Diocesan Board of Consultors, Diocesan Board of Administration, and other committees. In addition, he has been a member of the National Catholic Cemetery Conference since 1952, and was its president in 1957-1958.
Monsignor Gearing immediately pressed forward with work on the new school, as architect-parishoner Earl Bauer completed plans for a building that would make maximum use of the limited property available to it.
In May of 1965, with great fanfare, the building fund drive was opened with a minimum goal of three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The response was gratifyingly generous. A construction timetable could now be established.
On January 5, 1966, Monsignor Gearing finally broke ground for the joyously anticipated school. Slowly but surely, the project got underway and, bit-by-bit, occupancy was attained. As the school was erected, classes were moved, one by one, from the old structure to the new, starting with the first grade, which took up residence on September 12, 1966. On November 17th, the entire transition was made as all the students reported to the beautiful new building. Eventually, on October 4, 1967, the second wing was completed and occupied. This included the offices of the principal and secretary, the library, health room, teachers' room, and the Monsignor Benedik Auditorium-Gymnasium.
December 3, 1967, was the glorious day of the official celebration of this milestone in parish history as the Most Reverend John J. Wright, Bishop of Pittsburgh, dedicated the new St. Cyril's School
