Fr. Thomas Gearing, Pastor of St. Canice
A concelebrated requiem mass for the Rev. Thomas M. Gearing, pastor of St. Canice Church, Knoxville, will be offered in the church at 10:30 am Thursday by Bishop John J. Wright and Father Gearing's two brothers, who are district pastors.
Father Gearing, 59, died Sunday (Nov. 6) in Mercy Hospital following a long illness.
A native of Glassport, he attended St. Cecilia School, Glassport, and St. Vincent College and Seminary, Latrobe, Westmoreland County.
Father Gearing was ordained at St. Vincent on June 7, 1931, by the late bishop Hugh C. Boyle of Pittsburgh.
He served as assistant pastor of St. Agatha Church, Bridgeville, from 1931 to 1940 when he was appointed assistant pastor of Epiphany Church, Uptown.
In 1952 he was named pastor of St. Michael Church, Elizabeth, and its mission, St. Isaac Jogues, Elrama, Washington County.
He was appointed pastor of St. Canice Church on June 10, 1959.
The body will be at the St. Canice rectory until 3 pm tomorrow when it will be moved to the church.
Rites Before Mass
The Office of the Dead will be recited at 10 am Thursday followed by the requiem mass.
Surviving are two brothers, the Right Rev. Daniel A. Gearing, pastor of St. Cyril of Alexandria Church, Northside; and the Rev. Edward P. Gearing, pastor of St. Peter Church, Brownsville, Fayette County; and three sisters, Mae and Anne Gearing, of Pittsburgh, and U.S. Navy Cmdr. Virginia Gearing, stationed in North Carolina. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
