************
As far as Sam's early life he was indeed born to Hattie Anne Betts aka Joan. In fact on her Certificate of Death it says Hattie M Betts, but on this son's certificate it says Anne as a middle name. However, on his brother's certificate, Albert Lemuel Earnest, it says 'Joan' as Hattie's middle name so there are several variations.

What is known is that Sam's Mother Hattie was born to parents Mary 'Mollie' Alone Creech 1863–1918 & Albert E Betts 1855–1922 in Kimble County Texas in 1855.

She married Sam Houston Earnest around 1903 as the 17 Apr 1910 Census for her and her husband show that they lived in Knox County, Texas and had been married 7 years with only 3 or their 4 children surviving. One has claimed the first child was Hattie but I have found no documents yet to support this, however I have linked every other family member so far.

As the time of the above census, surviving children were Sally Elizabeth age 4, Albert Lemuel age 2 and Sam Houston was 0/12 months, with both the oldest born in Oklahoma and the last Sam born in Texas. Just before her death Hattie had another daughter on 14 Sep 1915. They named her Mary Alone Earnest named after grandmother May Alone on the Mothers side.

Sadly 16 Jan 1916 Mother Hattie passed from Pneumonia, this left a very young Sam with his Rancher father Sam of the same name who now had several children to support while taking care of his land and cattle. He eventually re-married 3 Mar 1917 to Ruth Carr. They had one child 2 Dec 1917, Forrest Bird Earnest, and later towards the end of 1918 she got pregnant, but tragedy struck again when Father Sam got pneumonia during the influenza outbreak and died Dec 1918.

This left 22 year old Stepmother Ruth a pregnant housewife widow, and with many children to support, and then to top it all off when the baby son came that August it was stillborn born 22 Aug 1919.

This was too much for one person and the children were given up or at least shuffled around, both brothers Albert Lemuel and Sam Houston were sent to the Masonic School as seen in the 1920 Census. Ruth kept Forrest, her newborn son, but had last child infant Mary Alone was given to paternal grandparents (father Sam's parents) Sallie Elizabeth Creach 1857- & George Lemuel 'Lem' Earnest 1850–1932 as shown in the 1920 Census and after their passing was later transferred to the Masonic boarding house in the 1930 Census that her two brothers had now left.

Ruth herself eventually remarried Elbert E Bryson and had two other children.
