Alice Mary Girtz, 89, of Remington, died at 8:04 pm, Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at St. Anthony's Health Care of Lafayette.
She was born July 24, 1924 in Remington to the late Ardis and Mabel (Burling) Cornwell. She graduated from Gilboa High School in 1942 and went on to receive an Associates Degree from Indiana Business College in Hammond.
Her marriage was to Lester Girtz on March 7, 1948 in the Remington United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on April 27, 2004.
She was a member of the Remington United Methodist Church, the M&B Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was the office secretary at the Gilboa Elementary and Remington Elementary School for 27 years. It has been said that "She wiped our children's tears, called us if they forgot their lunch money, she listened to their cute stories, helped them find lost articles, took their temperature when they were not feeling well, was their mom away from home on many days, and answered all our phone calls and gave the teachers a message as to where they need to go after school. She was patient, kind and understanding sitting at her desk for so many years."
She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.
Surviving are her children, Charlene Koebcke of Remington, Roger Girtz (wife: Jeanne) of Indianapolis, and Sharon Carlson (husband: Steve) of Monon. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Curtis Koebcke, Christopher Koebcke (wife: Jennifer), Jessica Girtz, and Christina Carlson.
Preceding her in death with her parents and husband is a son-in-law, Charles "Chuck" Koebcke.
Friends may call from 3-7 pm, Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Stitz-Clapper Funeral Home in Remington with an Order of the Eastern Star service beginning at 6:30 pm. Funeral Service at 11 am, Monday, August 26, 2013 at the funeral home with Rev. Mary van Wijk officiating. Interment to follow at Remington Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Remington United Methodist Church.
