Mr. Raymond E. Abernathy, 83, of Newnan, GA, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

He was born April 30, 1930 in Forsyth, GA to the late Elrod Abernathy & Willie Bell Rogers Abernathy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Willie Belle Cox Abernathy and his son Tim Abernathy.

Mr. Abernathy was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Newnan and he retired after a long career with Georgia Power.

He was active in the Newnan Elks Lodge and served as the Exalted Ruler. He and his wife were avid campers and were members of the Creek Jumpers Camping Club.

The funeral is Saturday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. in the Old Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Newnan with Rev. Jerry Walker & Dr. Jimmy Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The visitation is Saturday afternoon between 1:30-3:30 at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church, 15 West Washington St., Newnan, GA 30263
