Death of Bert Ellis.
A dispatch came to Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Ellis Tuesday from Church's Ferry, North Dakota, apprising them of the death of their son Bert Ellis. No particulars were given. Mr. Ellis at once dispatched instruction to send the body of his boy home. Another telegram was received, stating that the body would reach St. Paul to-day, and would be shipped from there at once. This is sad news indeed, not only for the bereaved parents and family, but for the many friends of the deceased here, where he lived all of his boyhood days. He was a sturdy boy, and had always taken an active part in the athletic sports so dear to the hearts of boys and young men. He was a young man of clean habits, and popular with all.
Mr. Ellis this morning stated that no further information had been received regarding the death of his son, but that arrangement was being made to have the funeral service conducted from the home at 2 o'clock next Sunday afternoon.
Later.--A letter was received this morning by Mr. Ellis from Ann E. Shovlin at Church's Ferry, stating that Bert was killed near Perth, N. Dak., at 8:30 Monday morning. He fell from a freight car and was killed instantly--dying without a struggle.

Death of Bert Ellis.
At 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the family home on Fourth street occurred the funeral of Bert Ellis, the young man whose sad death was noted in the Index last week. At that time the particulars of the tragedy were not known, but extracts from the Condo(?) Record and Churchs Ferry Sun which follow fully explain the sad occurrence. A crowd of people far exceeding the capacity of the house assembled to attest their respect for the dead as well as their sympathy for the stricken family. The services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Nichols, pastor of the Christian church, whose discourse was appropriate in every way. Music was by a quartett consisting of Mrs. Mollie Jones, Mrs. Lucy DeLong; C. E. Starks and C. W. Marmon, Miss Myrtle Gadd presiding at the organ. The pallbearers were O. S. Franklin, Clarence Reid, Robert Rooker, Wm. Butler, John Steenwyk and Marion Rosenberger. A large concourse of people went to the cemetery and witnessed the ceremony of laying the body away in a flower-lined grave.
Burt Ellis was born at Banbridge, Ind., March 13, 1877. Came to Iowa with his parents in 1881, making their home where Valoria now stands. In 1885 they moved to this place, where Bert lived all his life until about 2-1/2 years ago, when he went to North Dakota and engaged in railroad work.
