George Stein Herring was born in Upper Mahantongo, Schuylkill county, the son of Benjamin and Lydia (Stein) Herring, siblings were Sarah Ann, Jonas, Carolina, Cornelius and Benjamin Herring. He was the grandson of Sarah and Anthony (Anton)Stein of Weissenberg Twp, Lehigh and later Berks Co, PA. George was first married to Elizabeth Kutz Herring. They made their home in Barry, Schuylkill co, PA. along with their four children, Sarah, Augustus, Mary Jane and Emma Alice. Following her death he remarried to Catherine Hoch and they had one daughter, Catherine "Kate" Herring. George enlisted for the Civil War in the Union's distinguished 17th Calvary, Pennsylvania Volunteers on Sept. 27, 1862 as a Corporal with expert horsemanship experience. He was quickly promoted during his enlistment twice achieving full 1st Sergeant. He was killed in action on the opening day of combat at Gordonsville, Orange County, VA. two days before Christmas on December 23, 1864 and four months before the end of the war and achieved the Roll of Honor. He was buried in Culpeper National Cemetery in unknown plot for Union soldiers. Documented on family research by Stein family descendants.

I am a descendant of George's brother Cornelius Herring. I have been searching for his grave site for years. Thank you for helping solve this mystery. I would love to exchange any information. Does anyone have any pictures?
