Rivella Rivke Stukorovitch-Weinstein was born in 1898 in Marijampole, Lithuania the youngest daughter of Samuel and Nesha Lina Linsky-Stukorovitch.

She married Bernard London on October 28, 1922, in New York, New York. They had one son, Norman London.

Rivella left us too young, age 38, on May 31, 1936 after battling breast and brain cancer. She died at Creedmore Hospital, Queens Village, Long Island, New York where she was a patient.

She was buried on June 2, 1936 at the New Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York.

Rivke, as she was known to her family and friends, was survived by her devoted husband Bernard London and her cherished son Norman London who was only 12 when Rivke died.

Also surviving Rivke were her loving siblings Samuel Stukorovitch Weinstein and wife Sarah Minnie Alpert-Stukorovitch Weinstein, Bessie Stukorovitch Weinstein-Rosenbloom and husband Abe Rosenbloom, Zvi Hersh Stukorovitch, Julius Judel Stukorovitch- Weinstein and wife Dorothy Goldberg-Stukorovitch Weinstein, Dora Rachel Stukorovitch Weinstein-Srebnik and husband Dr. Philip Srebnik and Fanny Stukorovitch Weinstein.

Rivke's family name in Mariampole, Lithuania was Stukorowitz, also spelled Shatakarewitz.

When Rivke and her siblings immigrated to America, upon arrival, they changed their name to Weinstein.

Family lore states a cousin who was already in America told the first sibling to arrive to change their last name to Weinstein as it was an easier name than Stukorowitz / Shatakarewitz which at times was spelled Stukorovitch.

Subject: Srebnik Family History

C ~ NK forwarded your Srebnik history. I don't know how you found all this stuff. I will be interested to see the references, being a historian and a little anal-retentive to begin with (a function of the culture into which I was raised, by the way -- this is a characteristic of my generation.) But you have certainly tempted me to know more, and tell what I do know.

Our Grandma Rose was Weinstock not Weinstein, but I don't know where this name comes from. Stukarovich is correct. Lithuania is not exactly correct. Russian Poland is preferable, but this is another matter for discussion another time. For her, however, it was important that she came from the Pale of Jewish Settlement, whereas Phillip came from Russia itself, near Minsk as I recall, which meant that his family were wealthy and/or professional persons (doctors especially) because for Jews, only the wealthy or the professionals were allowed to live in Russia itself.

Her family were shopkeepers. I knew her as Rose Dorothy but the reversal of English and Hebrew names was a pattern in her family -- her daughter was Estelle Vivian in English but Chia + the Hebrew for star in Hebrew, and she was called Viv at home -- Nancy Kolodny has the first correspondence that Larry Shapiro sent to Estelle, a card accompanying flowers on Estelle's 18th birthday, addressed to "Viv."
More later on.
