Birth: Dec. 9, 1874
West Virginia, USA
Death: Nov. 28, 1963
Ohio, USA

Ida, my great-grandmother, who I remember very well. The thing that stands out in my memory the strongest are the memories of her garden and meals served when we visited. The meals were served buffet style, dishes loading down several large tables. Some meat, but overwhelmingly, dishes of vegetables, fresh, canned, dishes and dishes of her home grown vegies.

Ida's obituary was published in the Friday, November 29, 1963 issue of "The Daily News-Herald", Harrisonburg, Virginia:

"Mrs. David Halterman

Mrs. Ida Matilda Halterman, 88, wife of David Halterman and a resident of the Bergton community for many years, died Thursday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. B. Caplinger, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mrs. Halterman had not been well for the past five years and had been visiting her daughter in Cleveland since Nov. 11.

She was a daughter of the late Sellestine and Sarah Basye Whitmer and she was born Dec. 9, 1874 at Mathias, W. Va. She was a member of the Mennonite Church.

On Aug. 3, 1899, she was married to David Halterman, a prominent farmer of the Bergton area. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. E. B. Caplinger of Cleveland, Mrs. Minnie Trumbo of Broadway and Miss Geneva Halterman of Philadelphia; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one brother, Will Whitmer of Park View.

The Lindsdy Funeral Service is returning the body to Broadway. Funeral arrangements had not been completed last night."

An obituary also appeared in the GOSPEL HERALD - Volume LVII, Number 3 - January 21, 1964, Page 70, 71, published by Mennonite Publishing House (MPH), Scottdale, Pennsylvania.

"Halterman, Ida Matilde, daughter of Sellestine and Sarah (Bayse) Whitmer, was born near Mathias, W. Va., Dec. 9, 1874; died at Cleveland, Ohio, Nov. 28, 1963; aged 88 y. 11 m. 19 d. On Aug. 3, 1899, she was married to David Halterman, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters (Geneva, Mrs. Minnie Trumbo, and Mrs. E.B. Caplinger), 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and one brother (William). She was member of the Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Hermon Church, Dec. 1, in charge of Linden M. Wenger and Rowland Shank."
