I remember my great grandfather David Halterman quite well. I was the eldest of his 4 great grandchildren. David's photo, admittedly very out of focus, shows him carrying a bag of black walnuts. He always gave his great-grandchildren a small bag of shelled nuts to take home with them. Our parents always warned us to chomp easy, as David frequently missed a shell or two.

David's obituary was published in the "Daily News-Record", Harrisonburg, Virginia. It appeared on two days, as follows:
Tuesday, November 16, 1965 issue:
Broadway - - David Halterman, prominent Bergton farmer, died late Monday night at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1876 and was a son of the late Daniel and Barbara Delawder Halterman.
He is survived by three daughters, Miss Geneva Halterman of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Sarah Caplinger of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Minnie Trumbo of Broadway; tow grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The body is at Broadway Lindsey Funeral Home pending the completion of funeral arrangements."
Wednesday, November 17, 1965 issue:
The funeral for David Halterman, 89, a Bergton farmer, will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Hermon Mennonite Church by Bishop Linden M. Wenger and the Rev. J. Otis Yoder. Burial will be in the Halterman family cemetery at Bergton.
The body is at the Lindsey Broadway Funeral Home where the famiy will receive friends 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. today.
Relatives will meet at the Halterman home at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Merritt Haviland, Austin Strawderman, Laco Crider, Wade Sherman, John Geil, Edgar Stultz and Howard Mathias.
Mr. Halterman was a son of the late Dannel and Barbra Delaawder Halterman and was born March 16, 1876 in Hardy County, W. Va. He spent the majority of his life at Rt. 1, Bergton.
Mr. Halterman had not been well since June and had been in the hospital three weeks.
On Aug. 3, 1899, he married Miss Ida Whitmer, who died Nov. 28, 1963. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Victoria Yankey of Criders."
