The Senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Santa Ana. Orange County's oldest and largest African American congregation was known for his singing and inspirational work with young people, died of liver failure April 2, 2013 at UCI Medical Center. He was 57.
John Edward McReynolds was born on June 12, 1953, in Chattanooga, Tenn. to Ethel and Benny Nix. His first residence was in the home of his grandparents, Rev. Arthur and Mary McReynolds. At an early age he was baptized by his grandfather at the Stanly Chapel AME Church in Chattanooga.
John took his mother's maiden name, and was raised by his grandparents until the age of 11, when he moved to Riverside, California. John joined the Allen Chapel AME Church in Riverside where he was a member of the Youth Choir and his mother Ethel Nix was the church musician. John discovered his singing talent with his mother as she played hymns at home on the piano. His father was in the military.
John graduated in 1971 from North High School in Riverside. He earned a bachelor's degree in music performance from Chapman University in 1978 and a master's degree in sacred literature in 1990 from what is now Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary in Newburgh, Ind.
Rev. McReynolds joined Second Baptist Church of Santa Ana in 1977. He served as an Associate Minister from 1977 until 1983. In 1978 John McReynolds was ordained under Pastor Richard Kessee through the Tri County District Association.
In June 1981 he was joined in holy matrimony to Evangeline Denise Donald at Second Baptist Church of Santa Ana. The Lord blessed this union with two children, Melissa Renee McReynolds and Paul Ryan McReynolds.
On May 12, 1984 Rev, John McReynolds was officially elected Pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Santa Ana.
He leaves to cherish his legacy, his beloved wife of over 29 years, Evangeline D. McReynolds; children, Melissa Renee and Paul Ryan McReynolds of Santa Ana; His mother and father Ethel and Benny Nix Sr. of Riverside, Brothers, John Edward (Rosa) Ryan, Benny (Veronica) Nix Jr., Nathaniel Nix and Christopher Nix; Sisters, Mary (Walter) Cross and Joyce (Rheubin) Taylor, both of Chattanooga, Marilyn and Nancy Nix both of Riverside. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives, loved ones and the entire Second Baptist Church family.
