Jean K. Perkins
NEW BERLIN — Jean Kamerer Perkins, 88, of New Berlin passed away March 16, 2003, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.
She was born on Dec. 4, 1914, in Union City, Pa., the daughter of Frederick Donald and Marie (Thompson) Kamerer.
She was a graduate of Schenectady High School. She attended Syracuse University and graduated from SUNY Albany. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and participated in graduate studies at Syracuse University.
She married Ruso H. Perkins on April 6, 1942. He survives her.
She is survived by her children, son Ruso Donald Perkins, New York City; daughter Andrea L. Miller, Marshfield, Mass.; her son-in-law Paul Miller, Marshfield, Mass.; and her grandson, Thomas Byron Miller, Marshfield, Mass.; her sisters, Joan Thurston, Woodstock, and Julie and Charles Snell, Silver Spring, Md.; and several loving nieces and nephews.
In 1937, Jean came to New Berlin to set up the library at New Berlin Central School. She later became the children's librarian in the Cooperstown Elementary School for 18 years.
Pursuing her musical interests throughout her life, Jean taught piano in her home, sang in the St. Andrew's Church Choir and the Catskill Choral Society, traveling to England, Scotland and Boston and performing at Carnegie Hall. After retirement she became the organist at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin. She also traveled extensively with her husband, Ruso, throughout the U.S., Europe, and Central and South America.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2003, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church officiating.
Interment will be in the St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.
