Corporal John A. "Jay" Sampietro Jr, Badge 584, was killed in the line of duty today, August 17, 2005. Corporal Sampietro was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 44 in Webster County, near Strafford, MO. He was taken to Cox South Hospital in Springfield, MO, where he succumbed to his injuries. At the time he was struck, Corporal Sampietro was directing traffic while assisting the Patrol's Major Crash Investigation Team at the site of an earlier fatal traffic crash. On 09/28/05 2nd degree manslaughter charges were filed against the driver that struck Cpl. Sampietro.
Corporal Sampietro graduated from Sikeston Senior High School in Sikeston, MO, in 1987. He was appointed to the Patrol in January 1992, and was originally assigned to Troop E, Poplar Bluff. In March 2003, he transferred to Troop D, Springfield. In addition to his road duties, Corporal Sampietro was a pilot assigned to Troop D Headquarters.
Corporal Sampietro leaves behind a wife and two young sons, ages 4, and 10 months. He is the 26th member of the Patrol to make the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting the citizens of Missouri. Corporal Sampietro is the third member of the Patrol to die in the line of duty in 2005.

Jay received his associate degree in Law Enforcement from Mineral Area College. He was a member of the 64th Recruit Class of the Missouri Highway Patrol. He served as Corporal for Troop D an had been serving in the Webster County office since March 2003.
On November 13, 1999, he was united in marriage with Jennifer Hall and to this union, two sons were born. Along with his service to the Missouri Highwy Patrol, Jay enjoyed his volunteer work with the Logan-Rogersville Volunteer Fire Department and being a member of the Missouri State Troopers Assocation. He also enjoyed working at the Sikeston Rodeo and the Missouri State Fair, and spending time coaching his sons' T-Ball teams.
Jay was a very wonderful and caring son, husband, and father. His honesty and integrity were well respected by all. He was fair in dealing with everyone and was not one to pass judgment on anybody. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; two sons, John Matthew and Will Anthony Sampietro, all of the home; his father, John Anthony Sampietro, Sr., and his stepmother Gerrie, of Sikeston, Missouri; his stepfather, John Tumblson, of Thomasville, Georgia; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete J. Sampietro, Sr., of Germantown, Tennessee; maternal grandfather, Harvey Geeding, of South Haven, Mississippi; grandmother, Lena Holeman, of Memphis, Tennessee; motherand father-in-law, Kenneth and Beverly Hall, of Rogersville, Missouri; mother-in-law, Sandy Turner, Spokane; sisters-in-law, Chris Chastain and her husband Sean, of Sparta, and Amy Stanton, of Rogersville; a very close aunt and uncle, Rita and Bob Buse, of Tupelo, Missisiippi; as well as a host of other aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers and sisters of law enforcement and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother Judy Tumblson; maternal grandmother, Billie Geeding; and grandfather, William Holeman. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 2005, in the Logan-Rogersville High School Gymnasium, with interment with full Patrol honors following in the White Oak Cemetery.
