He was a hard working man, a good husband and father, and was loved by all who knew him. He was married to the former Hannah Guilliams, daughter of a Civil War veteran Laban Guilliams, who fought for the union.
He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and served in Cuba. He was working in a coal mine in 1926 when he was struck by falling debris. Though seriously wounded, he didn't die as a result of his injury until 5 years later.
