Chester Lytle Hoover
September 15, 1922 – April 1, 2006

Chester Lytle Hoover, 83, of Greybull, passed away at North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell on Saturday, April 1, 2006. Chester was born on Sept. 15, 1922 in Greybull, the son of Logan Chester and Leona Virginia (Perkins) Hoover. He received his schooling in the Stringtown District near Burlington and Greybull.

Chester enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. His plane crashed over Holland, and he parachuted out where he was captured and was a Prisoner of War from June 22, 1943 until being liberated on April 29, 1945. He received the Air Medal, Purple Heart, European Battle Ribbon with 5 battle stars, and various other military medals.

He married Doris Mildred Allen on July 7, 1945. She passed away in Dec. of 1953. He then married Kitty Hoover on June of 1975 in Bangkok.

Chester was a heavy equipment operator in the United States, Vietnam, Thailand and New Guinea.

He was an avid rock collector and enjoyed looking for arrowheads. He made polished rock tables, jewelry and miscellaneous novelty items. He enjoyed golfing and said that he was "addicted to golf ". He also enjoyed fishing, camping and telling his war experiences.

He was a member of the LDS Church, Midway Golf Course, Disabled Veterans of America, Ex- POW organization, Greybull Elks BPOE 1431, Veterans of Foreign Wars Leonard C. Purkey Post #3305 of Greybull, and various other military organizations.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Doris Mildred Allen Hoover, his sister, Bessie, his brother, Berlyn, two sons, Allen and Logan, and his second wife, Kitty Hoover on Aug. 9, 1996.

Chester is survived by two daughters, Vicky K. Strube and Debby Hoover, both of Greybull; two step-daughters, Jep Miller and Tana Hoover, both of Greybull; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren and one step-greatgrandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Greybull Ward, between Greybull and Basin at 10 a.m. with Bishop Lance Cheatham conducting the services. Burial will be held at the Mount View Cemetery in Billings, Mont. at 3:30 p.m. with full military graveside rites.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at the Atwood Family Funeral Chapel in Greybull from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Relief Society Room at the church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the Big Horn Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 471, Greybull, WY 82426 - to go to the VFW Cemetery Restoration Project at the Hillside Cemetery in Greybull.
