Son of Reverend Asahel and Cathryn M. Sutherland. He was educated at the Iowa State University, graduating 1868. He located in Dubuque where he read law in the office of Wilson and Dowd two years, and in 1871 was admitted to the bar. Remaining in Dubuque he associated himself with Platt Smith and H.B. Fouke, until 1874, when he located at McGregor, and formed a partnership with John T. Stoneman, of Cedar Rapids. In 1877 he married Margaret S."Maggie" Stoneman, daughter of John T. Stoneman.
