Elizabeth A. "Betty" Gragert Hawthorne, died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center, Albion, Nebraska. Betty, daughter of Roy and Ann (Bauer) Rotherham, was born December 29, 1925 at Ewing, Nebraska.

Betty was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Catholic Church, Ewing, Nebraska. She attended Ewing (NE.) Public Schools, graduating from Ewing (NE.) High School in 1944.

On February 7, 1945, Betty was united in marriage to Arnold Gragert at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Petersburg, Nebraska. To this union, 6 children were born: Sandy, Kay, Dan, Steve, Kevin, and Todd. They lived in Petersburg, Ewing, Elgin and finally moved to Albion all in Nebraska in 1957. Arnold passed away in 1966.

Betty married Russell Hawthorne on February 13, 1969, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Raeville, Nebraska. They made their home in Albion, Nebraska. Over the years, Betty worked as a waitress, a clerk at Safeway, a clerk at RC's IGA with her husband Russell and later as a hostess at the Villa Inn, Albion, Nebraska. Russell passed away in 1985. Betty later moved to the Samaritan Estates Assisted Living for a year and a half before moving to the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in June of 2012.

Betty was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Altar Society. She served as a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer, an Albion Senior Center board member and was a member of various card clubs. She enjoyed sports, especially Nebraska Football and watching Tiger play golf along with collecting dolls and cups and saucers.

Betty is survived by: daughter, Kay Schafer and husband Gale; sons, Dan Gragert and wife, Susie; Steve Gragert and wife, Vicki and Kevin Gragert and special friend Traci Cornwell, all of Albion, Nebraska; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; sisters: Bernadine (Leo) O'Malley of O'Neill, Nebraska and Sharon Ward of Ewing, Nebraska; brother: Edward "Butch" (Carol) Rotherham of Ewing, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Marge Rotherham of Crawford, Nebraska and Karen Rotherham of Ewing, Nebraska and Bernadine Batenhorst of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Larry Hawthorne of Battle Creek, Nebraska and Lyle Hawthorne of Texas and a host of relatives and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by: parents; husbands, Arnold Gragert and Russell Hawthorne; daughter, Sandy Fox; son, Todd Gragert; granddaughter, Lori Cromwell; brothers, Jim, Pat, Vince and Jerry Rotherham; sisters, Donna Wood and Geraldine Wright.

Interment was in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Petersburg, Nebraska.
