Full name: Opal Lee (Lay) Brooks, Woolsey.
Opal Lee Brooks Woolsey, 90, of Mountain View, Missouri departed this life on August 10, 2013 at Mercy St. Francis Hospital, Mountain View. She was born on February 21, 1923 in Winona, Missouri, the youngest of eight children of Henderson Roy Lay and Eliza Anna (Winchester) Lay. She was raised, along with four sisters and three brothers, on the family farm, and attended rural schools.
On December 22, 1941, Opal married Wilbert "Doc" Brooks at a residence on Highway 19 south of Winona. They resided for many years on a small acreage south of Grandin, Missouri in the Macedonia Community where they raised their two daughters, Linda Sue and Betty. The family attended Good Hope General Baptist Church.
In the summer of 1957, Doc's job took the family to Bismarck, Missouri where they welcomed a son, Wilbert Don, who was born in July, 1959. Opal remained a wife and homemaker, caring for the children. Returning to southeast Missouri in 1962, she was employed for several years as a cook in the Poplar Bluff School systems. Opal earned a Nursing Degree and worked as a Nurse's Aide in Doniphan and Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Opal later retired and moved to Mountain View, Missouri, where she met and married Archie Woolsey in 1989. She loved to dance; and enjoyed her flowers, embroidering, bird watching, music, and traveling. She enjoyed spending time with her family; especially the grandchildren and she adored her six great grandchildren.
Opal had a dream of being a police officer and enjoyed watching the "Cops" show on TV. She spoke many times recently of a desire to have her sisters to talk to.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Esther Buckner, Clara Sharp, Lloyd Lay, Nova Brawley, Gertrude Buckner, William Lloyd Lay, and Lester Lay; one son-in-law, Kenneth Murphey; and great grandson, Brandon Scott Murphey.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Smutny and husband, Rudy, of Ozark, MO and Linda Murphey of Doniphan, MO; one son, Don Brooks and friend, Dianna, of Lone Dell, MO; six grandchildren, Kevin Murphey, Kerry Murphey, Steve Day, Tanya Wharton, Wayne Brooks, and Sara Jane Dickinson; six great grandchildren, Colton Murphey, Kierra Murphey, Katelyn Howell, Brice Wharton, Brittney Wharton, and Louis Dickinson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
