Effie Mattie (Bethell) Paul, 86, of Viola passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2003, in Moline, Illinois. She was born on January 14, 1917, in the Acorn Community, in Ripley County, Missouri, the daughter of Alice Rebekka (Autry) and John Larkin Bethell. She moved to the Seaton, Illinois, area with her parents as a young girl.

She married Horace Lee Paul of Keithsburg, on Feb. 25, 1935, in Aledo, IL. The couple lived in Keithsburg, later moving to Rock Island. In November 1946, they moved to Viola where they spent the remainder of their lives. Effie was the beloved mother of five children.

She was a charter member of the Aledo Church of the Nazarene. She was active in her church serving as steward, Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher and served on several church committees. She dedicated her life serving our Lord; caring and praying for her family, church family and friends. Effie enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, knitting and reading her Bible. Her best friend was her husband, Horace.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; four sisters: Bessie, Martha, Alma and Ida; four brothers: Jessie, Herb, George and John; a son-in-law, James Morrow; and a grandson, Mark Nordin.

Survivors include: her husband, Horace; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Doris Paul, Rock Island; and Ken and Kathy Paul, Rockford, IL; three daughters and sons-in-law: Jeanie and Harris Nordin, Strasburg, OH; Alicia and Larry Ives, Aledo; and Carole and Dean Davidson, Moline; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Doris (Kistler) Bethell; a sister-in-law, Gertrude (Castle) Bethell; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were: Bob Dillbeck, Roger Hahn, Connie Randolph, Jimmy Bethell, LaVerne Bethell and Neal Martin.
