Levi Dewey was the son of son of Aaron Dewey & Sarah Noble. Levi was the husband of Mary Dewey. Levi Dewey & Mary Scott, both of Norwich, MA filed their marriage intentions on March 5, 1792.*
Levi Dewey appears as a private on payroll of Captain Hezekiah Russel's 2nd Co. September 27, 1784. He served June 15-17, 1782 against insurgents at Northampton, Mass. by order of Elisha Porter, sheriff during the Revolutionary War.
In June 1817 Levi Dewey, accompanied by his wife Mary and sons Justin and Stillman, left Norwich Bridge, Huntington, Mass. for Meadville, Crawford County, PA. They made the journey with a covered wagon pulled by a team of oxen.
They bought a farm of over 100 acres about 4 1/2 miles east of Meadville at what became known as Mead Corners (now Wayland), named for Gen. Mead of Meadville. They lived in a log house just east of the one and two story slate roof frame dwelling now owned and occupied by Raymond and Lina Theuret. Levi was a blacksmith. Levi also served as a deacon of the Meadville Baptist Church, was considered a marvel of business integrity and irreproachable in character. **
"The use of the initial 'D.' at the beginning of Levi's name is likely because of his status as a Deacon in the church. None of the many histories of the Dewey family show the D."***
