Robert M Bell was the son of Robert Bell (1755-1803) who immigrated to America from Ireland and settled in Kentucky by 1795.

Robert and Susannah Baker were married Feb 12 1818 in Nicholas Co Kentucky. They moved to Sangamon County Illinois about 1830.
Before leaving Kentucky they had three children:
Isaac B (1820-1880) married Susan Stokes
James H (1822-1901) married Milla Dotson
Mary Jane 1828-? who married John S Dickerson
After settling in Rochester Twp in Sangamon Co they had six more children
Phoebe Elizabeth (1830-1871) married John Johnson
Almarindia E (1832-1914) married James Sanford Galloway and Benjamin L Auxier
Squire J (1834-1847)
Pvt Preston B (1837-1884) (Civil War) mar 1st Mary A Clark, mar 2nd Anna S Skedmore
Austin (1839-1850)
Melvin (1843-1888) married Rachel Martin


Robert served several enlistments during the War of 1812 between 1812 and 1815 in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteers and Militia. He received Bounty Land for his service and a pension. He achieved the rank of 1st Sergeant.

He died from injuries sustained in accident from a runaway team four days earlier. His wife Susannah and son Melvin were crippled for life from the accident.
