He married Bernadette Ida Welter on June 9, 1953 at St Hubert's Catholic Church in Chanhassen (Carver), MN. They had 5 children: Daniel Harold, Victoria Marlene, Ellen Marie, John Leo, and Carla Mary. Walter and Bernadette divorced in 1985.
He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War.
