DUNNIGAN DEATH

The Passing of Mrs. Clara Lucretia Spencer

She Was a Native of This City and Was Married in House Where She Was Born

Mrs. Clara Spencer, beloved wife of John Griffin Spencer, died at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Abele near Dunnigan, Friday night. The information which came by telephone, caused no surprise, as her condition for several days prior had been so critical that but little hope for her recovery had been held out by the attending physician.

The body is expected to arrive in Woodland Sunday afternoon, but so far as it known by relatives in this city, the arrangements for the funeral have not been made.

Mrs. Spencer was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Abele. She was educated in the public schools of Yolo and Colusa and St. Aloysius Academy, in Colusa. She was a native of Woodland and became the bride in the same house in which also was born. If she had lived until the 4th of July she would have been 21 years of age.

Deceased was married in this city, at the residence of her grandmother, Mrs. Bertha Webber, August 15, 1905, to John Griffin Spencer, son of Mrs. A. E. Spencer and nephew of G. W., Ben and John Griffin*. of this county. It was a very happy union and the companionship thus begun was a sweet, beautiful and trusting, and could only be severed by death.

Her happy life was ideal and was a constant reminder of sunshine, music, and flowers. A few weeks ago there was born to her a daughter. This touched the gentler sentiments of her heart and awakened her soul to better, higher and nobler endeavor. Her happiness increased until the icy hand of death removed her first born and sorrow entered where joy before reigned supreme This great sorrow no doubt hastened her own death. No murmur escaped her when the bitter cup was pressed to her lips and Christian fortitude sustained her in that crying hour, but day by day she grew weaker until finally she sank into a tranquil sleep and entered upon that life which has not age.

Mrs. Spencer was a devout Catholic. At her mother's knee she received her first religious impressions and from her gentle teachings was formed a character which when she ripened into womanhood, left its gentle, kindly and beneficial influences in the community in which she lived and grew in the respect and esteem of her neighbors.

Those who knew Mrs. Spencer well loved her for her many virtues, her amiability, sinless life, sincerity of purpose and womanly sympathies. Her loss will be felt keenly by her many friends and in her husband and her parents and sisters it will be almost irreparable.

To her family and friends there remains the fragrance of a life in which was exhibited charming manners, a pleasing personality, the virtues and high ideals of pure womanhood and all the lessons to be learned from the useful career of one who was a loving and dutiful daughter and devoted and affectionate wife.
