LA CROSSE MAN VICTIM AS AUTOS COLLIDE HEAD-ON

Skull Fractured, Marcus Ames dies on way to Hospital--Occupants of Other Car Unhurt, Driver Exonerated.

WIVE AND 8 CHILDREN SURVIVE VICTIM

His skull fractured when he was thrown to the ground after a head-on collision between two automobiles on Wisconsin Trunk Highway No. 35 half a mile east of Bluff Siding Sunday at 4:30 p.m., Marcus Ames, 65 years old, of La Crosse, died before he could be brought to the hospital here after the fatal crash.

The accident took place when a Ford Touring Car in which Ames was riding alone smashed into a heavey Buick driven by Basil A. Casford of Osseo,Wis. Five people riding in the Casford machine were unhurt and the car was only slightly damaged.

The Ames car was thrown into the ditch where it turned over on its side and Ames was thrown headlong through the air and into the roadway. He was picked up unconscious and was placed in a ambulance to be taken to the Winona General Hospital but died before it arrived there. The ambulance was held up for several minutes on the concrete dike road by a long freight train and it is believed the man died there.

According to the report Made to Sergeant Julius Bronk and patrolman August Bingold by Casford, Ames was driving west toward Winona on the wrong side of the road. When Casford noticed that the cars were about to collide, he turned to the left,he said. Ames apparently turned at the same time and both machines struck head-on.
