Roy Oliver Disney
Birth: Jun. 24, 1893
Chicago
Cook County
Illinois, USA
Death: Dec. 20, 1971
Toluca Lake
California, USA

Walt Disney's brother. Roy Oliver was the middle of 5 children of Elias and Flora Disney. Elias was a carpenter on the 1893 Chicago World's Fair when Roy was born. Roy was eight when their next child, Walt Disney, was born. Roy served in the US Navy during WWI and was in a V. A. hospital recovering from tuberculosis in August 1923 when his brother Walt persuaded him to co-found the company that became Walt Disney Productions. Roy managed the company's finances and made the creative side possible. Soon after the company first sold stock in 1940, Roy became President, with Walt remaining Executive Producer. Shaken by Walt's death in 1966, Roy nonetheless announced his intention not to sell the company and to continue with Walt's plans for a Florida park. He was successful, and opened Walt Disney World (as named by Roy) in October 1971. His grave marker reads "He left the world a better place." He died at home in Toluca Lake, near the studio that he and his brother built.
