Roy was born in Gann Valley, South Dakota; the only son of Ashley and Katie (Wellman) Dunham. His four sisters, one older, adored him; he was a sweet, kind, quiet spoken gentleman.
He served an enlistment in the US Navy as an electrician. After return from duty he tried going into business with a Navy buddy in Oklahoma, but soon retuned to Long Beach, California. Roy became a residential delivery salesman for a local bakery where he became friends with M R "Pat" Davis. Roy introduced Pat to his sister, Doris; they married in 1934 and moved off to Fresno.
Roy married Eunice Lyman on Dec 15, 1939 and moved to Avenal, CA; (where Roy's father became a foreman at the discovery well in the nearby Kettleman Hills). Seeing a business opportunity with his old friend and brother-in-law, Pat Davis and his brother, Vern Davis, and with their wives the Davis families moved again. They had several successful business ventures included: Westside Candy and Tobacco Co. (distribution); Roy and Pat designed and built a miniature golf course; and established, built and operated a Refreshment Stand at the corner of Hwy 41 and 33 enlisting Roy & Eunice's help and friendship.
When Roy's sisters gathered in the Clear Lake region, Roy and Eunice moved to northern California where they owned and operated a bicycle and hobby shop in Lakeport.
The Dunham clan knew what family meant; they not only enjoyed working together, they fished, played cards, square danced, made crafts and prepared & shared many meals ...together.
