James N. Smith, age 82, a lifelong resident of Lorain, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

James was born on March 6, 1930 in Lorain, Ohio to Robert and Leatha (nee Street) Smith. He was a 1949 graduate of Lorain High School where he was a member of their football team.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, he was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, UN Service Medal, CIB and The Purple Heart.

James was employed by Lake Terminal Railroad from 1950 – 1958. He then went on to make his career with the United States Postal Service as a window clerk at the main office on Broadway. He was then transferred to the South Lorain Branch. He retired in 1989 after 31 years of service with the United States Postal Service.

He was a member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lorain. He was former President of American Postal Workers Union of Lorain County, former President of the Admiral King Band Boosters, for 3 years, Disabled American Veterans.

James enjoyed fishing, auctioneering, cooking, the outdoors, and woodworking. He made gliders for all three of his children among many other beautiful things. His family and God were everything to him.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis (nee Zehel), son, Jim Smith; daughters, Barbara Fries and Linda Bennington (Joseph Oglesby), all of Lorain; grandchildren, Brandon, Michael, and Sarah Fries, Jacob, Joshua and Justin Smith, Samantha and Julia Millard and Morgan Johnson; great-grandson, Weston Phelps; sister, Roberta "Bobbie" (Gordon) Bair.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Leatha (nee Street) Smith; sister, Geraldine "Gerry" Bentley and brother, Robert "Sonny" Smith.

The Smith Family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in the Funeral Center. Private inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
