Coral was murdered by her grandmother, Lois Arlene Janish. Bludgeoned to death with a hammer to her skull and then was dismembered and body parts placed in different places within the city. Janish was not arrested until July 2013.
Janish was granted custody of Coral after her mother was declared an unfit mother shortly after her birth. After Coral's disappearance, Janish was reportedly seen removing and discarding her granddaughter's bulletins just two days after Coral's disappearance.
The grandmother's boyfriend, now deceased, had been released from prison just the week before Coral's disappearance and had been accused of sexually abusing Coral.
In 2008 her grandmother was interviewed and stated that she missed her and thought about her everyday. Janish also told a reporter that year, "I think she's gone. I don't want to think that, but it's my gut feeling."
