WALNUT GROVE TOWNSHIP
W. H. TALLMAN, farmer, Section 23, P. O. Osage Mission, native of Ohio, born in 1819. He moved to Iowa, in 1855, remaining there until 1860, when he went to Illinois, engaged in farming until 1868, when in a wagon, he came to Kansas and stopped at Osage Mission, soon afterward buying a claim of Daniel Hill, in the neighborhood of his old Illinois friends, Zimmerman Teas, and Bozzler. He did not get his land deeded until 1874, on account of the Osage ceded land trouble, but went on improving and raised good crops; relating many anecdotes of the early settlers and his struggles. In 1881 the corn crop failed and he had to buy grain for his stock that season, but in 1882, more than made up his loss. In 1845, Mr. Tallman married Miss Hill; they had two daughters, both now married. His father was a Virginian, and lived to the advanced age of ninety-two and died in Iowa.

William Holland Tallman, one of the early pioneers of Neosho county, died at his residence in Walnut Grove township, on the 11th inst. of organic disease of the heart. The diseased was born in Pickaway Co. Ohio on the 17th of Febr 1818, and at the time of his death, was nearing his 72nd mile-stone. He was married in 1845 to Elizabeth H. Pennywell. In 1855 he emigrated to Decatur Co. Ia. in 1860 to McDonough Co. Ill., and in 1868 to Neosho Co. Ks. Through life the deceased was a person of strong physical constitution and in his old age was in well presevered manhood, coming to this country in an early day, he fought hard against the adversities that the early pioneers had to endure. He possessed an energy, thoroughness and determination that were essential in opening up civilization in all new countries, by living strictly honest, unassuming and straight forward he made friends with all whom he associated. In previous life he had been a consistent Methodist and died in that faith. He was quietly laid to rest in the Bethel Chapel cemetery, Rev. Lidsey officiating. While he is gone, he leaves behind, an aged companion, who was two years his senior, two daughters, six grandchildren and hosts of friends. "Requiescat in pace."
