McGoveran, Tressie

Tressie McGoveran Resident of Antioch.
Tressie Jane Sanders McGoveran was born April 6, 1917 in Howe, OK, to William Zennas Sanders of Homer, GA, and Mary Magdalene Ritter of Detroit, AL. She peacefully overcame the trials of her earthly existence Nov. 16, 2006 at approximately 12:50 p.m. surrounded by her family, joining her dear husband at last. She was in the care of Bruns House, Alamo, CA, after a long struggle with complications following a broken hip and from myelodysplasia. Tressie grew up on an Oklahoma frontier devoid of electricity, telephones and automobiles, remembering childhood travel in her father's horse and buggy. She was married Oct. 19, 1935 in Van Buren, AR, to Lowell Benage McGoveran, born Sept. 18, 1913 in Heavener, OK. They moved to Oakley, CA, in 1950 with three children, and shortly after, moving to Antioch where they resided their remaining days. Tressie worked as a homemaker all her adult life, although she also worked at various employment and volunteer efforts. Tressie was recognized by both the State of California (with Lowell) and the VFW for efforts co-founding and serving in Antioch Brown Bag. They were devout Christians, placing faith in God above all else. Despite a humble life, Tressie descended from eight American Revolutionary Patriots and three 1778 Virginia Declaration of Independence signatories. Her maternal great-grandfather, Jonathan Colley Vaughn, settled in Indian Territory shortly after the Civil War. A youngest child, Tressie was preceded in death by her parents, all four brothers, and all three sisters. At the tender age of 5, she witnessed her oldest brother's death by pneumonia following hypothermia, and at 7, her beloved father's death by heart attack. Lowell predeceased his adored wife, Jan. 11, 1989. Tressie's eldest granddaughter, Yvonne, passed away June 2, 2003. Tressie is survived by four children and their families (Jerry and Carole of Brentwood, Barbara of Oakley, Bill and Joy of Stockton, and David and Lorene of Boulder Creek), including 10 grandchildren (Jerry, Mark, Michael, Jason, Victoria, Stephen, Phillip, Teresa, Richard and Lauren), 19 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, plus many special friends and her little companion, "Boots." Her last wish was that each be given her love. Viewing will be held at Higgins Funeral
Home, 1310 A St., Antioch, Sunday, Nov. 26 (1-4 p.m.), and Monday,
Nov. 27 (9 a.m.-noon). Graveside service and life celebration will
follow at 1 p.m., 2500 East 18th St., Oak View Memorial Cemetery,
